My Sugar Fast Experience
And why I'm starting again
2 years ago I began the viral, 75 Hard challenge where is seemed everyone wanted to change their bodies by changing their mindsets.
I’m not going to talk about the challenge here but I will say that from the list of things you had to achieve each day, the one that stood out to me was to avoid eating sugar and snacks. This was something that I knew I could really benefit from because I had a thing for sugary things. I didn’t go overboard but my threshold for flavour had risen to a level I wasn’t proud of.
I decided to take it on and removed all snacks from my life just like that. I threw away everything that would be a temptation to me and replaced all the snacks with a nice big water bottle. It was great because this bottle had the hours written on one side so I could keep track of how much I was drinking, as well as be encouraged to stay consistent. Whenever I felt hungry (which often were actually thirst cues), I would drink water instead of finding something to eat.
My coworkers at the time (I had just changed departments so this was their first impressions of me) used to say how impressed they were that they had never seen me eat a packet of crisps, drink pop or say yes when I was offered a sweet or gum. I would be lying if I said that this didn’t make me feel good about myself.
Well, this lasted for about 2 months before I slowly returned back to my old ways.
At first when I tried any snack, every flavour seemed too much. But it did feel exciting none-the-less to eat something I had once deprived myself of.
Then yeah… I increased my intake and just went back to normal and, here we are now.
I’ve decided that for the sake of my teeth and skin (I’m tired of the sensitivity and breakouts) that enough is enough. I’ve cut all this out once before so I know it’s possible for me to do it again.
I will not only reset my tastebuds but will cut out all unnecessary things altogether.
Yes, a little “treat” every now and then is “nice” but is it worth the after effects? For me, it no longer is, especially when I think about all the rubbish that is in food nowadays. I’m finding it harder and harder to see these things as treats or even a nice reward anymore. It’s time I start finding better and healthier ways to treat myself and as a bonus, ones that won’t cost me a penny.
As much as I’m making these changes for myself, I’m also doing it for God. I was reminded in my study today that my body is His temple (1 Corinthians 6:19) and I’m to take care of it. How can I ask Him (the Holy Spirit) to dwell within me and then stuff myself full with things that I know He’d rather me leave alone? My body is His temple so I should start treating it with care and respect. I should start treating myself with the care and respect I deserve.
Now, I’m not looking down on anyone who doesn’t want to give up snacking and sugar whatsoever, I just know how I feel when I indulge in these things myself (especially the things that I know are not good for me - speaking on added sugars not plain fruits and things like that). If I have the power and the means to change something that’s not making me happy or feel good inside, then why shouldn’t I do something about it?
I know the first few days will be rough, but the long term benefits are too good for me to not make these changes.
I will be sharing a little of my journey so make sure to subscribe to stay updated!
Have you done a sugar fast before? If yes, how was your experience and would you do it again or have you kept it up?
